Paying close attention to how FORM and FUNCTION intertwine, Innovolo’s product development and design process also looks at the bigger picture to consider how products fit into your BRAND ecosystem.
A product development strategy is based on developing new products or modifying existing products, so they appear new, and offering those products to current or new markets. These strategies come about when there is little to no opportunity for new growth in a company’s current market. At that point, a company has one of three choices:
- create an updated product for a current product in the current market,
- enhance an existing product for a new market, or
- simply move away from the product altogether and stop growth.
Most competitive companies will not allow themselves to opt for the third choice, so a strategy is so designed to either evolve a product for its existing market or enhance it to introduce into a new market.
A robust product development strategy is one that:
- begins with what you know now, and builds on that with iterative just-in-time research,
- focuses on what matters most,
- is created collaboratively both with all key stakeholders and the naïve experts,
- is guided by your vision,
- puts the users first
- clearly states the main problem or benefit,
- describes what makes your product special,
- states the business benefits desired,
- is flexible in its approach, and
- is put to the test.
Our effective ideation services are perfect for brands and organisations looking for unbiased specialists to help generate and validate new business ideas.
We approach each challenge bravely, arriving informed, amplifying intelligence, validating desirability, and confirming feasibility, bringing together the whole squad to leverage the insights, experiences, and ideas of product owners, designers, engineers, and QA.
We use various ideation techniques:
- Questioning assumptions
- Opportunity redefinition
- Triggered brain-walking
- Semantic intuition
- Picture prompts
- Worst idea technique
User Experience (UX) is critical to the success or failure of a product in the market but what do we mean by UX? All too often UX is confused with usability which describes to some extent how easy a product is to use and it is true that UX as a discipline began with usability – however, UX has grown to accommodate rather more than usability and it is important to pay attention to all facets of the user experience in order to deliver successful products to market.
There are 7 factors that describe user experience, according to Peter Morville a pioneer in the UX field who authored several best-selling books and advises many Fortune 500 companies on UX:
The biggest challenge for new products is offering something that truly wows consumers. It is not good enough to simply meet expectations. You must exceed expectations. Consumers have a repertoire of brands. If they are currently buying a brand in a specific category, they typically go back to their existing habits.
If your product is not unique, your consumer will go back to their favoured brand because there is no difference or significant difference between the new product and the old product.
Innovolo’s industry-leading concept screening solution identifies winning concept initiatives and prevents costly distractions. Whether screening new product ideas, line extensions, or re-launches, our system can be adapted to be a key part of your early-stage screening process.
Our unique concept screening methodology as part of the Innovolation Framework™ is designed to help you prioritize a broad range of innovative ideas to identify the ones with the most consumer potential. By first understanding your needs for a screening system, we work together to agree on the scope of the technique. By applying the technique with consistency, we can capitalise on the power of our historical database of norms to make the study process fast and cost-effective. And, because it is built on our reliable, world-class methodology you can move forward in the development process with confidence in your decisions.
Helping you determine not only where your current product is in the product life cycle, but also what features and functionalities are most valued and what elements customers are willing to pay you a premium for.

From deploying state-of-the-art ANALYSIS tools to transforming your sketch into a manufacturable PRODUCT, our mechanical design team are experts at making your new product work!
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), is a simulation tool used for analyzing complex thermal and fluid phenomena. It is instrumental in maintaining the quality and safety of many products we use on a day to day basis, such as an automobile or even the house we live in. CFD software is indispensable for “Front-loading” product development to ensure the best product concepts are identified early in the design process. Design quality will be improved during the conceptual design phase by conducting basic studies of fluid and thermal phenomena that directly affect product performance.
Visualising the complicated movements of a gas or liquid flow can be quite convoluted. By implementing simulation software into the workflow, analysing these movements is easier than ever. It enables the user to predict the performance of their products before physical testing. This results in a more optimized design early in the product development cycle. In some cases, simulation can even replace the need for physical testing, altogether.
The finite element method (FEA) is the most widely used method for solving problems of engineering and mathematical models. Typical problem areas of interest include the traditional fields of structural analysis, heat transfer, fluid flow, mass transport, and electromagnetic potential.
Fundamentally, FEA relies on the discretisation of the geometry to solve mechanical and thermal equations, effectively subdividing the structure in an assembly of simple (finite) elements. Instead of tackling a big problem directly, we divide it into smaller and more easily solvable problems and then get a unique result for the system as a whole. The discrete model is an approximation of the behaviour of the real physical structure. However, provided that the discretisation mesh is dense enough, the approximation is sufficient to accurately model reality.
The practical advantages of using FEA and Innovolo’s engineering expertise and the skillsets available in our team have focused our projects on the following sectors:
- FEA for Heat Exchange products
- FEA for Pressure Containing products
- FEA for Plastics and Composite Materials
Design for manufacturability (DFM) is the general engineering practice of designing products in such a way that they are easy to manufacture. The concept exists in almost all engineering disciplines, but the implementation differs widely depending on the manufacturing technology.
DFM has several major benefits for the client:
- Shortened new product development cycle
- Ability to achieve the lowest total cost of ownership with materials and labour costs
- Ability to attain better or more consistent quality control through standardisation
Design for assembly (DFA) is a process by which products are designed with ease of assembly in mind. If a product contains fewer parts it will take less time to assemble, thereby reducing assembly and production costs. DFA assists with the quickest and smoothest transition of the product from development into production.
CAD software is used to increase the productivity of the designer, improve the quality of design, improve communications through documentation, and to create a database for manufacturing.
Innovolo uses a number of diferent CAD software packages offering extremely powerful functionality that shortens product development time and reduces costs.
3D modeling is the process of developing a mathematical representation of any surface of an object in three dimensions via specialized software.
Our engineers use a various 3D CAD software packages to produce our models, including:
- AutoCAD / AutoCAD Mechanical
- Creo Parametric / Elements/Direct
- Patchwork 3D
- Rhino 5
- Solid Edge ST9
- DesignCAD 3D Max
- Catia 3DExperience
- 3DS Max
- Autodeck Alias
A prototype is an early sample, model, or release of a product built to test a concept or process. It is a term used in a variety of contexts, including semantics, design, electronics, and software programming. Prototypes is generally used to evaluate new product designs to enhance precision by system analysts and users.

Innovation within organisations is typically cumbersome and painful. It’s not a quick fix. It typically involves reorganising, retraining, and reassigning people.
To really innovate effectively you need to be able to make bold decisions without worrying about how people will react, making mistakes-and learning from them – and ultimately being free of the constraints that rules or procedures create.
Our approach is to help individuals, teams and organisations look at their processes differently and think creatively in an open way. We have several tools which help people think laterally about commonly accepted rules and procedures, which helps break down barriers to thinking differently for the good of an organisation.
Manufacturing STRATEGY, BUDGET & TIMELINE requirements inform our new product design approach. Keeping these requirements in mind ensures you not only have a great product but one that fits into your organisation’s overall priorities.
