Innovation Accountability Partner Service
We're an innovation accountability partner. We keep your board of directors focused on the task at hand.
Innovation is the beating heart of the corporate raison d’être.
Innovation is what differentiates incumbents from disruptors. Innovation is what inspires the hearts and minds of your employees to remain loyal.
Innovation, therefore, should be held accountable.
What are the top innovation issues that face Boards today?
Typically, R&D teams face two major challenges, firstly not having the capacity, and secondly, not having the capability.
The third major challenge, which sits with the Board, is how to make sure the expenditure on R&D and innovation initiatives actually pays off, and that teams are held accountable.
An innovation accountability partner service can provide the Board with the knowledge that each project is being managed effectively, and that the innovation and creativity of the team is not being compromised. The service can also provide a point of escalation should there be an issue.
Benefits of having a dedicated innovation accountability partner reporting to the Board.
Accountability partners can be described as a combination of an innovation coachee, a mentor, and a consultant who is a Board-level colleague of the Head of R&D, CTO, or CIO.
The accountability partner needs to be able to effectively communicate between the Board and the R&D team, understand the practicality of R&D projects, and be able to identify potential roadblocks. The accountability partner should be a senior and experienced engineer, technologist, or scientist who will ensure that the R&D team is on track. R&D is the foundation for any great company, and it needs to be managed effectively to establish a long-lasting and profitable business.
Where does the innovation accountability partner fit into the team?
Innovation accountability partners are not project managers and sit above the team, so they have a broad overview and understanding of what is going on in this area of the business (which is actually a very strategic one).
They will also be able to identify potential organisational fit issues between R&D, Sales, Marketing, and Manufacturing. The innovation accountability partner service is therefore not only concerned with the project management of the individual R&D projects, but also with the overall direction of the R&D team.
How does the innovation accountability partner service work?
The innovation accountability partner service is typically a six-month contract, with the option of an extension, if required, and is provided on a per diem basis.
The service is tailored and managed custom to your organisation’s needs and strategic objectives.
The service is typically provided to the Head of R&D, CTO, CIO and Board and can be provided to other parts of the organisation, if required.
The service is proactive, and therefore the innovation accountability partners will typically spend a considerable amount of time with the R&D team, providing regular and consistent feedback to the Board.
How does the service work for multinational or global firms?
The service can be provided globally to any firm looking for a dedicated innovation accountability partner, wherever they may be located and regardless of the size of the firm.
The service provides a global view of the R&D projects and can be provided to the whole organisation, or just to the R&D team.
What are the benefits to a firm of having an innovation accountability partner?
The service can provide Boards with a clear and concise overview of the innovation initiatives within the R&D team, as well as a point of escalation.
The service can also be used to instill accountability and transparency within the team, and therefore increase the effectiveness of the team.
Why accountability matters.
Accountability is fundamental to the success of any business and this is no different for a firm that has invested in R&D and innovation initiatives.
Getting the right people on the bus is the first step in ensuring that the innovation initiatives pay off; however, having the right people in the right seats is just as important.
The innovation accountability partner service addresses both of these issues by providing the Board with a clear and concise overview of where the R&D team is at, and ensuring that the team is managed effectively.
Sometimes more importantly however, is that Boards are asking for help to ensure that they themselves are kept accountable to the R&D commitments they make to their shareholders. The service can provide a point of escalation for the Board, should there be any issues, and therefore help Boards to be held accountable for their commitments.
Accountability is a key driver for all Boards to take action with a no-excuses approach.
